Foster Care

Updated: 3 days ago

46,000 children in need of a home, urgently: Only 9,000 homes available. That’s a wildly disproportionate ratio – and many of these children are in our communities. As the local church, we have not only the capacity, but the responsibility to be part of that change. But no one should have to step into foster care alone.

And while not everyone can become a foster carer, we can ALL do something.

That’s why we’ve partnered with The Homeward Project – a movement committed to seeing better outcomes for kids and families involved in the Out-of-Home Care system – specifically through inspiring and equipping Australian Christians in a united, holistic ministry.

Together, in 2024/25, we’ve:

  • continued to support current foster families

  • run the first Trauma Informed Training for our Kids Church team

  • connected with other churches in our communities to build the foster care network

  • developed a variety of pathways so that anyone can play a part, no matter their situation! From becoming a full-time / part-time / respite carer to babysitting. From setting up a veggie patch for kids to learn in nature, to the ‘fixers’ who are handy with a tool, to cooking a meal to ease the load – the possibilities are endless!

Giving their All

Foster carers give their ALL, often with little more than a few hour’s notice, to provide a safe, loving, nurturing home for children who cannot stay in their birth homes. They give their whole hearts, not knowing how long each child will be with them, but knowing that the time they have is sacred – a window in which they can speak life and give love to these precious kids. Luke 9:23 (NLT) says –

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.

In few places is this kind of daily self-sacrifice demonstrated as clearly and wholeheartedly as in the lives of Foster Carers. As Foster Care Chaplain Michelle Walker says,

It’s the hardest job in the world – and simultaneously the greatest thing I’ve been witness to.”

Yet despite the difficulties, Foster Carers say –

“I didn’t know that I could feel such immense love.”
“It’s a wonderful experience for the whole family.”
“We can’t imagine our lives any other way.”
“Being foster carers is such a rewarding experience.”
